This position represents Pets Lifeline in a professional and courteous manner and provides quality animal care, client service and administrative duties as it relates to both the shelter organization and medical care of the shelter animals. This position requires learning a wide range of policies and procedures, the ability to oversee that accurate data is entered into our shelter database and continually keeping abreast of current knowledge and trends in animal care and service.
This position is currently part time with at 3 days a week preferred schedule. (2 days minimum), but could become full time. Schedule is flexible.
RVT Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage the health program of shelter animals, including initial health exams upon intake, overseeing and administering vaccines and medications, setting up (under veterinary direction) treatment needs and ongoing monitoring of sick animals.
- Assist the shelter veterinarian in health exams and surgery, and maintain accurate/current health records on all animals, treatment sheets and medical logbooks.
- Maintain inventory and order all medical supplies for the shelter.
- Remain abreast of current knowledge and trends in animal care and service.
- Schedule veterinary appointments for shelter animals as needed and arrange for transportation to and from appointments.
- Discuss with ED and other pertinent staff to determine when an animal should be euthanized.
- Oversee all medical areas and supplies in a neat and clean manner.
- Perform diagnostic tests on animals, including drawing blood, running appropriate tests and analyzing fecal samples
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
Education/Experience: Registered Veterinarian Technician License
A minimum of high school diploma or equivalent; minimum of 2-years’ customer service experience in a fast paced environment with a variety of client needs.
Knowledge: Knowledge of animal breeds, behavior, and handling; knowledge of shelter software a plus; Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel).
Skills: Effective verbal communication skills for in person and telephone contact; excellent customer service skills, particularly with a variety of client situations; able to prioritize duties and perform multiple tasks; able to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment; proficient computer skills; ability to learn, retain and communicate a wide variety of information; detail orientated
Abilities: Able to work with animals; able to work with disinfectants and cleaning supplies; able to perform physical work including scrubbing, mopping, lifting, walking, and bending.
Working Conditions:
Work Environment: Work performed in animal shelter setting; potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and cleaning chemicals; potential for exposure to dangerous and fractious animals; potential exposure to high noise levels when in kennel area; potential for animal bites and scratches while handling animals.
Physical Activities: Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds; potential for standing on feet for 8 hours a day.
