Reports To: Public Veterinary Hospital Medical Director

Part Time, hourly – 4 days/week (T-F) to start, with future requiring two Saturdays a month.

summary:  The Sonoma Humane Society’s Veterinary Hospital is seeking a skilled RVT or experienced veterinary assistant to join our team and make a difference! We are a full-service, AAHA accredited, non-profit, veterinary medical facility, located on site in Santa Rosa, CA.  The RVT or assistant is responsible for providing high quality, humane animal care while maintaining the highest standard of medical,surgical and dental care for our highly valued patients and clients.  We are committed to promoting responsible pet ownership, preventative health care and health-related educational opportunities for our clients. The Sonoma Humane Society Veterinary Hospital is a non-profit venture. All proceeds directly support medical services and adoption programs for the homeless animals in Sonoma County.

essential Duties and Responsibilities but Not limited to:

• Assist Veterinarian and Animal Care staff with examinations, treatments, anesthetic procedures and associated record keeping for all animal patients.
• Maintain controlled-substance drug logs and keep controlled drugs secured to meet Drug Enforcement Agency and state board specifications.
• Prep animals for surgery, premed, induce and intubate, monitor animals while under anesthesia and while recovering from surgery.
• Clean and sterilize surgical instruments, drapes, gowns, etc.
• Clean and disinfect animal areas as necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
• Other duties as assigned to ensure a positive public image and to enhance the operation of the organization and improve the quality of life for the animals.
• Ensure proper care and protocols are being followed.
• Handle stress and pressure with poise while working in high pace working environment. Promote a positive attitude among staff.
• Be willing and available to stay late or through breaks, when needed, to assist with emergency or critical care patients.
• Perform euthanasia in accordance with Society policies & California laws.

ABILITY TO OR SKILL IN:

• Providing excellent customer service, both internally and externally.
• Ability to routinely lift and carry 50+ pounds.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. 
• Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
• Knowledgeable with medications to include control drugs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  A license is not required for this position, however the candidate must have a minimum of 2 years experience as a RVT or 4 years experience as a veterinary assistant.
