Expanding the role of RVTs in California

Tuesday, October 10, 2023 8:29 PM | Anonymous

The California Veterinary Medical Association formed an Access to Care Task Force in 2021 to address the severe need of access to veterinary care, especially pet owners experiencing financial hardship, or the inability to get an appointment with a general practice veterinarian. The CVMA has proposed and approved that RVTs can establish a Veterinary Client Patient Relationship, and can administer vaccines and perform preventative measures such as heartworm and FELV/FIV testing. This measure is seen to help owners with financial hardship, as these visits are thought to be less expensive; and by being able to have access to preventative care, can prevent costly emergency visits. The VMB has approved this proposal, but it is not a law yet. There are still many steps for this proposal to be written into law. As an RVT, you can become more involved with the CVMA and VMB and show approval for this measure, which will not only help improve access to care, but can help engage and retain RVTs in this state.
